Sufism is regarded as a creed for living and a path of moral conduct; for this reason, the phenomenon of Sufism has occupied an elevated position within doctrinal and philosophical studies. It has been known among the Chinese, the Indians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Jews, the Christians, and the Muslims alike, yet Islamic Sufism distinguished itself with an epistemological model that diverges from the traditionalist (Atharī), scholastic theological (Kalāmī), and philosophical schools of doctrine. Its leading figures engaged with many of the questions that occupied the theologians (ahl al-kalām) and the philosophers, foremost among them the origination of the universe, the origin of the world, the concept of existence, and the nature of the human being within this existence. The development of Sufism over its historical course gave rise to various orders and schools within it—at times diverging, at other times interacting; the doctrines of certain groups converged while others stood in opposition; some blended with philosophy, others with Shi'ism, with scholastic theology, or with traditionalism. The methodology of each in inquiry, exposition, and doctrinal grounding was shaped accordingly by its sources and its epistemological model. Out of this emerged a Shi'ite Sufism, a Sufism associated with the theologians, a traditionalist Sufism, and a philosophical Sufism—each of these epistemological models engaging with the question of the nature and origin of existence. Among the most renowned and most contested of these doctrines are the belief in the Unity of Being (waḥdat al-wujūd) held by a faction of Sufis, and the doctrine of Emanation (al-fayḍiyyah) held by Muslim philosophers and the Esotericists (al-Bāṭiniyyah). In this study, we present theological discussions in order to elaborate the conceptual vocabulary of these doctrines, under the title: Emanationist Philosophy and Sufi Unity of Being: A Comparative Study. | - |
