لقد عانى المسلمون الذين بقَوْا في الأندلس ـ لظرف أو آخر ـ بعد سقوط غرناطة ؛ آخر قلاع المسلمين في الأندلس أشدَّ أنواع التعذيب والتنكيل من طرف المسيحيين برعاية رجال الكنيسة وزبانية محاكم التفتيش الإسبانية محاولين في ذلك طمس هويتهم ومنعهم من ممارسة شعائرهم الدينية وتكميم أفواههم ، إلا أن ذلك التضييق لم يلجم ألسنتهم ، ولم يكسر أقلامهم ؛ إذ حاولوا أن يَنْظِمُوا شعرا يعبق برائحة المقاومة والتحدي ، ويؤلّفوا نثرا في شكل قصص وحكايات يهدفون من خلالها التنفيس عن المعاناة الشديدة التي سلطت عليهم ، ونقل تراثهم إلى أبنائهم ، فكان بذلك أدبُ الأقلية المضطَهدة يَجُوبُ الأندلسَ مُعَبِّرا عن الواقع المرير ، وفاضحًا سياسةَ المَلِكَيْن الكاثوليكييْن وخيانتَهما ونقضَ عهدهما مع المسلمين.
