Abstract

يراهن توينبي Toynbee في استقصائه عن علاقة التقدم التكنولوجي بالارتقاء الحضاري على نتائج تقدم العلوم دون عقال يوجهها، تلك النتائج التي تشهد على فظاعة التحول من الروحي إلى المادي سواء بالنسبة إلى الإنسان أو الكون الكبير، والتي تعطي صورة لفردوس أرضي يحترق ويتلاشى أمام أعيننا، وينبئ بنهايات مدمرة للحياة بمكوناتها، كما يراهن على الأحداث التاريخية التي أثبتت في كل عصر من عصورها أن الارتقاء المادي يعطي انطباعا خاطئا وينتج هالة من سراب الخلود للحضارة التي تكون في حالة سكون، وهو في واقع الحال يكون ارتقاء على حساب التقدم الحضاري للمجتمعات و رفاهها و ردّة في نفس الوقت المقاييس الحضارة.
