This study examines the political, economic, and cultural development of Algiers from the 4th to the 8th centuries AH (10th–14th centuries CE). Re-established in the first half of the 4th century AH as “Jaza’ir Bani Mazghanna,” the city came under the rule of several dynasties, including the Zirids, Hammadids, Almoravids, Almohads, and later the Hafsids, Zayyanids, and Marinids. Political rivalries and periods of independence contributed to significant changes in the city’s development. Algiers gradually evolved from a marginal agricultural settlement into an important economic center, with diverse markets, agricultural and industrial activities, and commercial relations with cities in the Maghreb, Andalusia, and Christian Europe. From the 6th century AH, it also developed into an important cultural and educational center through the establishment of religious and educational institutions and the activity of local and foreign scholars. This development contributed to a rich intellectual heritage in Islamic sciences and the humanities.
